The Funny Thing about a Best Friend
They say your best friend is someone who you can trust, who will always be there for you, who you can talk to for hours and never be bored with. I don’t doubt that. These statements define a person in who you can find perfection in terms of platonic love.
But during one of my deep thoughts of the reality of the world and nonsense like that, I realized the interesting thing about best friends. They have the power to destroy your life. Now, I’m not saying that they will or even plan to, just that, if he or she so chose to, could turn your life into a living hell.
They could go about doing so in two ways.
Firstly, they are with you during your most vulnerable of times. They could say the worst things to you, and to a certain degree, you would believe them. They could sabotage you plainly by taking pictures of you in the height of indecency and post them all over the internet simply because you allow them to see you in this state. You trust them
Secondly, they have a bit of a package of information. A handful of secrets, of unseemly opinions, inappropriate dreams, sinful desires. How did they obtain this bomb of thoughts? You so gladly handed it to them on the night when your boyfriend broke up with you, when that hot guy passed you in the hallway, when some other friend was ticking you off with her mannerisms. Why did you do that? Because you trusted them, and knew that telling them did not risk your well-being.
Where am I going with this? Surely, not that best friends should be given any less trust, or that now is the time to kick off the paranoia, but the basic principle of trust. We trust our best friends because they are there for us. Because they have experienced things we have experienced; because they understand. Trust is the thing that we give to the people who are meant to protect us, to people we love, and to people who trust us. Best friends are an extreme case. You trust them to hold your deepest secrets and stash them away as securely as their own; to stand by your side when you are at your lowest. Now, why do we keep trusting our best friends if they have the greatest potential in ruining us? Because, they have the power to destroy your life, but don’t.
